Significance of Number 18 in Judaism: The word for “Life” in Hebrew is “Chai.” The two Hebrew letters that make up the word “Chai” are Chet and Yud. The numerical value of Hebrew letters, Chet is equivalent to 8 and Yud is equivalent to 10. So “Chai”, Chet and Yud together, equals 18. Giving money in multiples of $18 is symbolic of giving “Chai” or life. Many people give money in multiples of $18 as presents to someone celebrating a birth, a wedding or a bar or bat mitzvah. Meaning of “2 Life 18”: “Here’s to life!” In other words, “Here’s 2 Life (filled with the lucky number 18!)”

HRO Slide Show

We are coordinating our relief efforts with these leading teams: J/P HRO, 1st and Alton, C.A.R.E and  LifeGivingForce that are on the ground in Haiti. We believe that  they are making a huge difference in the immediate areas of critical medical care, clean water, food, shelter and air transportation and that they are committed to the long-term rebuilding of Haiti. In addition, we continue to support the many grassroots efforts and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are coordinating vital relief programs within Haiti, these include: Artists for Peace and Justice, American Red CrossAngel Wings International, International Medical Assistance Team, Partners in Health, CARE Haiti, CDTI Hospital, Christ Fellowship Church, Compassion Alliance, Convoy of Hope, Fishers of Men, Enfants Entraide, Free the Children, GLOBAL D.I.R.T., Giving Children Hope, Haiti Clinic, Hope for Haiti, IsraAID, IDF, Les Petits Freres et Petits Soeurs de l’Incarnation, Medishare, Missionary Flights International, Morningstar Christian Academy, Operation Blessing, Project Cure, Reach Out to Haiti, Association Cabral Developpement, Helping Hand Mission Organization and many other local organizations.

We are also continuing to coordinate relief and rescue efforts with the Government of Haiti, The State Department, The US Embassy in Haiti, U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and key members of Congress and other foreign governments and many multinational companies including The Hain Celestial Group, Nika Water Company, LifeGivingForce and others that continue to support our efforts for the long-term rebuilding of Haiti.

Notable Donors

Other major notable donors include Drew Brees the Quarterback of the New Orleans Saints and MVP of Superbowl XLIV and his foundation The Brees Dream Foundation, Irwin Simon, CEO of The Hain Celestial Group who donated over 250 tons of supplies that included vital baby formula, soy milk, rice milk, baby food, water and diapers. Hain has renewed their commitment to keep a steady stream of supplies flowing into Haiti for the next year during the rebuilding process. Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, and many others have helped us raise funds, get donated foods, medicine and medical equipment to help earthquake survivors in Haiti.  We thank everyone who has and continues to help our incredible TEAM effort to save lives in Haiti, especially Alison Thompson (Medic), Oscar Gubernati and Sean Penn who have selflessly given so much of themselves since the first week on the ground in Port-au-Prince at the Petionville Country Club IDP Camp and DMAT Hospital.

Food and Water Supply, Moving forward…

There is a need to stop shipping food like MRE’s and spam that is not part of the local staple diet and that most native Haitians find repulsive (especially children) to eat. We believe that a shift is necessary in order to educate locals about how to plant and grow crops to produce their own food and put people to work. A self-reliant community will help reduce expensive imports from The Dominican Republic and The USA that no one can afford. 2 Life 18 Foundation is actively working with the Mayor of Thomonde and in collaboration with the Association Cabral Developpement (owners Eddy Daniels and Marc Lafalaise) and with other public international agencies, coupled with key faith-based Catholic and Baptist organizations to start the immediate expansion of existing farms and developing new farms and work programs in Haiti to produce what they need so that Haitians can reduce their dependency on foreign aid.

Mission Accomplished! More Missions planned….

Because of your help, we have already successfully completed many missions to provide emergency medical, food, and water transport by air to Haiti during the first week of the earthquake. In the past weeks, we have worked with Sean Penn of J/P HRO and the 1st and Alton Group to transport hundreds of doctors, nurses and medics to major hospitals in Haiti. Hundreds of tons of donated medical aid, food, water, tents, medical equipment, and water purification systems. We have also organized airlifts of 37 orphans to be reunited with parents in Miami, and critical helicopter airdrops of food, water and medicine into Leogane, helping save hundreds of children’s lives who were stranded by impassable roads. We thank our donors that were responsible for sponsoring emergency Heli-airlifts of critically wounded children to surgical centers where many lives were saved.  Special thanks for multiple uses of commercial, private, and cargo planes provided by donors in the USA and UK, that have allowed us to not only help support the NGOs that we are working with, but also for helping us get medical personnel and supplies into affected areas that have not been covered by the media.

In the first weeks of the disaster, Virgin America donated seats on flights departing to Florida for over one week as they transported medical personnel and urgent medical supplies to Florida. Supplies were then transferred to the next available private jets or cargo planes going to Haiti. Although the ability for commercial aircraft to land at the only airport serving the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince (PAP) still remains limited, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin America continue to send medical supplies, personnel, food and medicine to South Florida. Virgin America has carried medical professionals and 40,000 pounds of medical supplies, surgical kits, food and medicine supplied by our California-based non-profit 2 Life 18 Foundation Inc. to South Florida for connection on authorized transports to Haiti.

Donations to 2 Life 18 Foundation Inc. are very much appreciated and will go a long way as we continue our ongoing efforts of supporting people in need in Haiti. We also recommend that you consider supporting the NGOs that we have listed on our website, since we know that they are on the ground and distributing aid to Haiti. Please note that shipping costs are very high and that it is much less burden on the NGOs at this time to acquire goods by importing them from supermarkets in the Dominican Republic that are only 1-7 hours away by car or truck.

Donations and other items at this time that an NGO may need include:

• Medical doctors, surgeons, pediatricians and nurses for a one week rotation
• Medical supplies like sutures, surgical gloves, IV drips, crutches, wheelchairs
• Medicines - antibiotics, anesthesia, painkillers, morphine, syringes and motrin
• Toiletries – soap and shampoo
• Tents and cots for 4 to 6 people
• Non-Perishable food
• Baby formula
• Baby diapers
• Kotex

Please note that when donating goods to any affiliate NGO, please check with them in advance and see what specific items they may need and if they have the funds or means of transporting your goods to Haiti. When sending items, please be sure to include a detailed invoice stating that it is a donation and not for resale. All packages must be clearly marked with contents and a complete manifest in order to clear customs. Make sure to include the country of origin and value.

Some reports on our success from Haiti and updates from our team medic:

From: Michael Regan
Subject: Thank you for the successful flight
Date: Monday, March 01, 2010 11:55 AM

David/Albert/Marianne,

I just wanted to send a quick note thanking you for all the effort, good faith, and funds that you put into last night’s flight.  I know you made a lot of children and parents very happy.  The readout I received from the Embassy is that things went smoothly at the airport in Port au Prince.  I hope those of you on the flight had a chance to spend a bit of time with the children and those parents who were on board.

Very best regards,
Mike Regan, US Department of State

“David, I just wanted to thank you and your donors for the fantastic planeload of medical equipment and medicines you sent to us. We have just unloaded the equipment at the IsraAID encampment within the Israel Defense Forces camp here in Port au Prince. Some of the items are already in use and others will be going into service in the coming days. Any equipment that our team cannot use will be transferred to a hospital or other appropriate facility. Thanks again for all your efforts. The Haitian people need it badly. Shabbat Shalom” – Alan Schneider in Haiti

“Everywhere I go I hear David Perez helped us with this and that. Everyone is grateful for your huge effort in support.” – Medic Alison Thompson in Haiti

“Located an army base feeding 40,000 people daily but they only have enough food for today. Food and water are priorities right now. The army is begging us to help. Amputations daily with no meds. Situation dire. We were woken up by beautiful singing about God and we ran off to find the church. 40,000 people were lined up at 4 waiting to be handed the smallest bit of food to last them the day... The team saw over 2,000 very infected patients today. Dehydration and many health problems are exploding all over. There is so much to do. We have seen over 5,000 patients in the last few days and it's a tiny drop in the big bucket.” – Medic Alison Thompson in Haiti

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to coordinate and provide help, rescue operations, and compassion during and after disasters and emergencies.

THE ORGANIZATION
The clear consensus is that we must build upon the foundation that we began together. We have a moral imperative to be prepared to respond immediately to the needs of disaster survivors - particularly if governments are ever caught off guard again. My wife, Orly, and I formed a public charity for the common purpose of responding to people in times of disaster. Donations to the 2 Life 18 Foundation, Inc. will go directly to our disaster relief efforts. Funds will be utilized to respond quickly in times of national and global emergencies. As a team, we hope to continue extending help to victims as they rebuild their lives – restoring independence, sustainable autonomy, personal dignity, and reuniting families.

GOAL
Our goal is to partner with existing governmental and relief agencies in order to provide urgently needed evacuation, food, counseling, housing, financial aid, and medicine to victims of disasters. In the aftermath of most disasters, our organization and its founders continue to provide ongoing support to displaced families, medical personnel and rescue workers. We provide air transport, purchase homes, give home rental assistance, and coordinate the transportation of food and medical care to and from disaster areas. 2 Life 18 Foundation, Inc. to this very day continues to provide direct financial assistance to many grassroots organizations that are rebuilding Gulf Coast and Haitian communities. Our long-term goal is to build on the effective mobilization that we have spearheaded as a private-sector based “first response” team: we help victims rebuild their lives following catastrophic disasters. Our long-term vision includes the creation of jobs so that communities become and remain self-sustaining.
