Significance of Number 18 in Judaism: The word for "Life" in Hebrew is "Chai." The two Hebrew letters that make up the word "Chai" are Chet and Yud. The numerical value of Hebrew letters, Chet is equivalent to 8 and Yud is equivalent to 10. So "Chai", Chet and Yud together, equals 18. Giving money in multiples of $18 is symbolic of giving "Chai" or life. Many people give money in multiples of $18 as presents to someone celebrating a birth, a wedding or a bar or bat mitzvah.

Earthquake Preparedness
With the fires we have experienced over the past several years, we have learned to be prepared in the event of an emergency. However, with an earthquake, there is no advanced warning (and it usually happens early in the morning while we are still in bed!). In any event, there are a few things we can do to help us be prepared should something of this magnitude occur:
1. Know where your home’s gas cut-off switch is located. Depending on what happens (earthquake and/or resulting fire), you may wish to shut off the gas supply to your home.
2. Keep your cell phones fully charged.
3. Don’t let your car’s gas tank go below ? tank.
4. Keep a paper list of important names and contact information (just in case your cell phone directory or computer becomes unavailable).
5. Keep important documents safe (should be kept in a safe deposit box at your bank or in a fire-proof safe).
6. Have a pre-arranged contact system (calling tree or meeting place) for your family and friends.
7. Maintain a small emergency supply of non-refrigerated food and water; both for your family and your pets.
8. Keep a list of any important medications you are taking, and keep a small supply handy.
9. Consider packing an “emergency backpack” that you can grab and take with you on a moment’s notice. This backpack could include a small supply of medications, spare glasses/contact lenses, water, change of clothes, your contact list, etc.
